Opinion on the Annual CADA Conference this year!

Every year I list the reasons not to attend:

1. Terrible timing, too close to May

2. I should use the money towards my athletic programs to cover their needs

3. Is it really worth the expense?

Every year I return, and I am always SO glad I went.

1. I came away with knowledge, resources, and connections that have more value than how I would have spent the funds otherwise.

2. I came away reaffirmed that I'm not the only AD that feels overwhelmed, underfunded, and just trying to strike a balance between home and work.

3. The time away from the chaos at school allowed me to tackle some tasks that I had been putting off, unable to tackle because of the time and focus that they required.

I've already put it in my calendar for next year.  Sometimes it takes leaving the dance floor to stand on the balcony to be able to be in a place to reflect and grow.

The True Purpose of Sports

Sports are avalued part of our culture.  We valuesports because we believe the students who are involved acquire somethingthrough their participation. But have we ever looked closely at how theybenefit?  What do the students whoparticipate in our programs actually get and what is the purpose ofeducation-based sports.

Defining Our Purpose

Each year we are presented with an opportunity to provide growth-filled experiences for the students we coach.  As we begin another year as a coach of education-based athletics and activities, take a moment and reflect on this question — “What will you give the students on your team this year that will sustain them beyond the physical aspects of the game you coach?”  You can best answer this question by reflecting on the following four questions:

1.      Why do I coach?

2.      Why do I coach the way I do?

3.      How does it feel to be coached by me?

4.      How do I define success?

I make a difference but can’t do it alone.
