    Life in AD Retirement and Tips for the New ADs

    What have I been doing since retirement?

    For the past three years, I have been working for the Northeast Colorado Postsecondary and Workforce Readiness Partnership. This partnership is funded by the El Pomar Foundation.

    The Postsecondary Workforce Readiness Program is involved in creating 8th Grade Career Fairs in Eastern and Northeastern Colorado helping students and their families make informed decisions through meaningful career conversations with area businesses.

    In addition to putting on 8th Grade Career Fairs, we also help juniors and seniors with finding internships and apprenticeship opportunities with area businesses, Career Cabs, helping fund Rural Ameritowne as well as Parent/Teacher Career Expos.

    Also, I have been officiating volleyball for the past 4 years as a member of Colorado Volleyball Officials Association.

    What do you miss the most about being an Athletic Director?

    What I miss the most about being an Athletic Director are the conversations and interactions with the students, coaches, teachers and yes, parents on a daily basis.

    Also, miss the networking and relationships created over the years with all the athletic directors, principals and coaches.

    What piece of advice would you have for a new Athletic Director?

    Communication and attention to detail I feel go hand in hand for a beginning Athletic Director

    Coaches meetings are vital to get to personally and professionally know your coaches, discussion in and around  the CHSAA handbook for establishing protocols and procedures, sharing your expectations of them and they of you are vital to kick the school year off in a positive manner .

    A “ beginning of the year” all-coaches meeting followed by seasonal coaches meetings should be mandatory and will help establish that communication which is truly a two-way street.

    Athletic directors should afford themselves the time to check and then double-check their schedules especially if starting a two-year scheduling cycle.

    All schedules will change throughout the year--- make sure you relay these changes to all of the major stakeholders that need to know of these changes ASAP.

    Athletic Directors, coaches and administrators don’t like surprises. Establishing vital and open communication among these groups will go a long way to minimize future surprises and hopefully make the year as smooth as it can be.

    New AD Area


    The New AD Follow-Up meeting that will be held at the CHSAA office on November 5th provides some great information. I highly encourage new AD's to attend if you can fit it into your schedule.

    The LTI 502 class that is offered by CADA before the meeting from 8 AM - Noon is GREAT! Many AD's take this class whether they have been an AD for 1 or 5 years.  It will cover a lot of things that you have dealt with in the first few months on the job, as well as things that are still to come in the first year.  It's typically taught by a panel of veteran Colorado AD's and you'll get some great insight. LTI courses are the best professional development you can take as an athletic director!  There is a cost of $70, but this is about half the cost of most LTI classes offered at the state and national conferences. I know some athletic directors pay for this fee from their professional development budget instead of their own pocket. Also, if you are looking into getting your Certified Athletic Administrators Certificate through the NIAAA this is a required course.
